Census 2011 – make your Greekness (hellenismous) count

The 2011 Census is an opportunity to express your Hellenic heritage and make your hellenismous (Greekness) count. In the past the Census has only recorded about 2000 Greeks in New Zealand. We know this figure is way too low. The next Census will be held on Tuesday, 8 March 2011. Everyone who is in New Zealand on that day must fill in a census form. The Census is completely confidential but your answers are important. Agencies use the information to plan services for communities and where they should be.

There are three questions where you can show your Hellenic identity (hellenismous).

  • Question 11: Ethnicity – if you have Hellenic heritage, please write Greek or Cypriot, and any others that apply, in the space provided. This will help to identify the size of the Hellenic community in New Zealand.
  • Question 13: Spoken Language – If you are able to have an everyday conversation in spoken Greek, please write Greek in the space provided. Please do not mark English if you have trouble being understood. This will help agencies to decide if free interpreting should be provided or to support Greek as a community language.
  • Question 18: Religion – if your religion is Greek orthodox, please write this in the space provided. This will help to identify the Hellenic church community.

Please remind your friends and family to record their hellenismous in the 2011 Census. Get a copy of these instructions in English and Greek Census Notice.
